Packaging Glossary

Plain-English definitions for the flute types, ply counts and quality tests referenced across our product pages and FAQ — GSM, Burst Factor, ECT, BCT and more, each with a link to the full explanation.

Flute & Ply Basics

Flute (A, B, C, E, F, BC, EB)

The wavy paper layer glued between the liners of a corrugated board. Asian Packaging Industries manufactures the full range — A, B, C, E, F, BC and EB — each offering a different balance of cushioning, compression strength, print quality and stacking performance.

Flute Profile Differences

The main difference between A, B, C, E, F, BC and EB flutes lies in their thickness, cushioning ability, compression strength, print quality and intended application — from lightweight retail cartons to heavy-duty industrial and export packaging.

Ply (3 Ply, 5 Ply, 7 Ply)

The number of paper layers in a corrugated board. As ply count increases, the box becomes stronger and more suitable for heavier products and demanding transport conditions — the right ply depends on product weight, stacking and shipping distance.

Quality & Testing Terms

GSM (Grams per Square Meter)

One of the most important quality parameters in corrugated packaging. GSM measures the weight of paper per square meter, helping determine the thickness, durability and overall quality of the kraft paper used to manufacture the box.

Burst Factor (BF)

Measures the strength of kraft paper by determining how much pressure it can withstand before bursting. A higher Burst Factor indicates stronger paper, which results in more durable and reliable corrugated boxes.

Learn more →

Edge Crush Test (ECT)

Measures the edgewise compression strength of corrugated board — how much vertical force the board can withstand before it begins to collapse. One of the most important quality tests in the industry.

Learn more →

Box Compression Test (BCT)

Measures the maximum load a complete corrugated box can withstand before it collapses. Unlike tests on individual materials, BCT measures the finished box — one of the most practical tests for real-world packaging performance.

Cobb Test

A standard test measuring the water absorption capacity of paper and corrugated board — how much water is absorbed by the paper surface over a set period (usually 30 or 60 seconds), expressed in grams per square meter (g/m²).
